Thai PM Aphisit Says Government To Join JBC Meeting With Cambodia in Indonesia

2 April 2011 -- The Nation

Though the documents of the Thailand-Cambodia Joint Boundary Commission might not be considered in Parliament on Tuesday, the government will join the JBC meeting with Cambodia in Indonesia next week as planned, Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva said yesterday.

"We are engaging with Cambodia to go ahead with the JBC meeting on Thursday and Friday," he said.

Parliament might not be able to convene on Tuesday as scheduled, since Speaker Chai Chidchob has informed the members that he had to wait for official notification from the Constitution Court, Abhisit said.

The JBC, which is charged with deliberating on the long-running dispute over the Thai-Cambodian land boundary, became a matter of controversy as the government submitted minutes of its previous meetings to Parliament for approval.

Parliament has taken the documents into its consideration since November but has been reluctant to endorse them because of political pressure from domestic and international conflicts.

Parliament set up an ad hoc committee to study the documents for months but failed to vote. Some lawmakers requested that the Constitution Court rule whether Parliament needed to consider the documents.

The court said it had no grounds to rule on the issue.

Abhisit said it might not be necessary for Parliament to consider the JBC's documents, as some legal experts said they did not fall under Article 190 of the Constitution.
