The first round of political consultations between the foreign ministries of Uzbekistan and Cambodia was held in Tashkent on 5 April 2011, the press service of the Uzbek Foreign Ministry has said.A Cambodian delegation was led by Uch Borit, secretary of state of the Cambodian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.
The sides thoroughly exchanged views on prospects for expanding cooperation in the political, trade, economic, cultural and humanitarian spheres, as well as on regional and international issues of mutual interest. They emphasized the significance of making efforts to eliminate a lack of information about the countries.
The meeting also noted the need to strengthen a treaty-fixed legal basis, which would be a reliable guarantee of stepping up cooperation in various fields.
Developments in Central and Southeast Asia were also discussed. The sides also discussed collaboration within international organizations, including the UN, as well as the a possibility of establishing partnership between Uzbekistan and ASEAN [Association of Southeast Asian Nations].
The Uzbek side accepted for consideration Phnom Penh's request for supporting its candidacy for a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council in 2013-14.
Following the meeting, the sides agreed to continue holding political consultations.
