The 7th Meeting of the Joint Commission for Bilateral Cooperation Between Cambodia and Thailand was held on Friday in Cambodia’s Siem Reap province.
The Cambodian side was led by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister H.E. Hor Namhong and the Thai side by Thai Foreign Minister H.E. Kasit Piromya.
The half-a-day meeting focused on Cambodian workers in Thailand, illegal border trespassing, border gate opening, visa issuance, agricultural products and border marker searching, H.E. Hor Namhong told a press conference upon the meeting.
The release of the two detained Thais recently sentenced to eight and six years in jail on charges of illegal entry into Cambodia, unlawful entry into military zone and espionage, as well as the removal of Cambodian flag from the Keo Sikha Kiri Svara pagoda were not among the topics of discussion.
According to the Cambodian deputy prime minister, Cambodia expressed thanks to Thailand for continuing to provide over 100,000 jobs to Cambodian workers in Thailand until 2012.
H.E. Hor Namhong also called on the Thai side not to use violence against Cambodian people who illegally enter Thailand.
Both sides discussed the opening of a new border gate at Stung Both, leaving Poipet border gate as a tourism one, he added.
Concerning the border issue, the Thai side proposed a meeting of the Joint Border Commission without the approval of the three agreements from the Thai National Assembly, H.E. Hor Namhong stressed.
The meeting also touched on the single visa for the two neighboring countries. “If it works, we will do the same with other three countries – Vietnam, Laos and Myanmar. It means that with one single visa, we can travel to five countries and we can apply for the visa in any of the five countries,” he explained. –AKP
