Thai, Cambodian Foreign Ministers Discuss 7 Thais' Case at ASEAN Meeting Retreat

Bangkok 18 January 2011 -- TAN Network

The Thai and Cambodian foreign ministers held informal talks on the sideline of ASEAN Foreign Ministers Meeting in Indonesia and the Thai minister then asked the Cambodian government to speed up deliberating the case of the seven Thais held in Cambodia.

Thai Foreign Minister Kasit Piromya held informal talks with his Cambodian counterpart Hor Namhong in Indonesia where the foreign ministers meeting of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, has been held from Jan 15 to 17.

Kasit said the Thai government wants the cases of the seven Thais held in Cambodia to be concluded as soon as possible in a bid to allow the two countries to improve and upgrade bilateral relations.

The seven Thais, including Democrat Bangkok MP Panich Vikitseth, were arrested for alleged trespassing on the Cambodian border.

The Cambodian press have reported that the case of the seven Thais will be considered this week, but it is still unconfirmed whether it would be between January 18 and 20.

The Thai foreign minister also informed his Cambodian counterpart that relations between the two countries must not be ruined by political movement of certain groups.

Moreover, the Thai government has insisted on boosting relations with Cambodia and talks on border disputes must be continued.

Kasit also apologized to ASEAN foreign ministers on the point that Thailand in the past few years may have caused confusion and unease to the ASEAN member countries.

However, he said that should be considered as development of the Thai politics which is not intended to cause any trouble to other countries, particularly the ASEAN members.

Kasit also hopes the ongoing Thai political turmoil will not have any affect on the establishment of the ASEAN Community.
